  • Best for urgent and high-value cargo
Deferred

Consolidated

4 to 7 days airport-to-airport

  • Grouped on fixed schedules
  • Lower cost per kilogram
  • Ideal for planned replenishment
  • Full documentation and tracking
Dedicated aircraft

Charter

Custom schedule, direct routing

  • Whole-aircraft capacity
  • Outsized and main-deck cargo

How Air Is Priced

Chargeable weight, explained.

Airlines sell space, not just mass. So they bill the greater of what your cargo weighs and how much room it occupies. Here is the math, up front, so your quote never surprises you.

The volumetric formula

Standard IATA air freight divisor

L (cm) Γ— W (cm) Γ— H (cm)divided by 6,000= volumetric weight (kg)

You are billed on whichever is larger: the actual gross weight on the scale, or the volumetric weight from the box dimensions. A light but bulky pallet is charged on its size, because it fills space the airline cannot resell.

A worked example

One pallet, 120 Γ— 100 Γ— 110 cm, 180 kg actual

Dimensions120 x 100 x 110 cm
Volume1,320,000 cubic cm
Volumetric weight1,320,000 / 6,000 = 220 kg
Actual weight180 kg
Chargeable weight220 kg (the greater of the two)

Tighter, denser packing lowers the volumetric figure and your rate. We show both numbers on every quote and flag where a re-pack would save you money.

Decision Guide

Air or ocean, which one?

Air costs more per kilogram, but for the right cargo the faster cash cycle, lower inventory cost, and shorter exposure more than pay for it. Here is how to choose.

Speed wins

Choose air freight

1 to 7 days, value density and urgency

Best forHigh value relative to weight (electronics, pharma, fashion)
Transit timeExpress 1 to 3 days, consolidated 4 to 7 days
Cash cycleFaster, inventory in market sooner
PerishabilityShort transit protects shelf life
UrgencyLine-down, AOG, fixed launch or shelf dates

Choose ocean freight

20 to 40 days, dense and time-flexible

Best forDense, lower-value, non-urgent cargo
Transit timeAdds weeks, plan ahead
Unit costFar cheaper per kilogram at volume
CapacityFull containers and project freight
FootprintLower carbon per ton-mile

Specialized Handling

Cargo that needs more than a hold.

Dangerous goods, cold chain, and high-value freight each carry their own rules, equipment, and paperwork. We match all three to your shipment before it moves.

Dangerous Goods

IATA-compliant handling for lithium batteries, aerosols, and classed chemicals. We prepare the DG Declaration and route to an aircraft that accepts the class.

Perishables

Temperature-controlled handling and cool-dolly transfers for produce, seafood, and florals. Short air transit protects shelf life end to end.

Pharma & GDP

Validated cold-chain lanes with active or passive packaging, temperature logging, and Good Distribution Practice documentation.

High-Value

Secure tendering, screening, and Gateway Shield all-risk cover for electronics, semiconductors, and time-critical launches.

Pricing

What's in your air freight rate.

One number on the quote, priced on chargeable weight. Everything below is rolled into the all-in rate unless it is called out as an add-on.

Included in the rate

  • Airport-to-airport air freight (priced on chargeable weight)
  • Fuel surcharge and security surcharge
  • Air Waybill (MAWB and HAWB issuance)
  • TSA cargo screening
  • Basic export documentation
  • Cargo build-up and palletization
  • Real-time milestone tracking
  • 24/7 operator support

Optional add-ons

  • Door pickup and final-mile delivery (quoted per lane and zip code)
  • Customs entry and brokerage (quoted per entry)
  • Dangerous goods handling (IATA DG) (varies by class)
  • Perishable and pharma cold storage (temperature-controlled, per day)
  • Temperature-control packaging (active or passive) (per shipment)
  • Charter (whole aircraft) (quoted per flight)
  • Gateway Shield insurance (tiered by cargo value)
  • Dimensional-weight reweigh and re-pack (as needed)
  • Duty + tariff + MPF (passed through at cost)
  • Ship Green carbon offset (plus 2.5% of rate)

We quote everything up front. If a surcharge changes mid-transit (carrier fuel adjustment, peak-season rate, additional handling) we email you a pre-approval before billing it.

Paperwork

Documents you'll need.

Upload these in the Gateway portal and we handle the filing. Missing a doc? We'll flag it before it causes a screening or customs hold.

Required

Commercial Invoice

Item-level breakdown: HTS codes, unit and total value, country of origin, incoterm. Used for customs valuation and duty.

Required

Packing List

Pieces, dimensions, gross and net weight per line. Drives the chargeable-weight calculation and matches the invoice line-for-line.

Generated

Air Waybill

Gateway issues the House Air Waybill (HAWB) at booking; the airline issues the Master (MAWB). It is the contract of carriage and your tracking key.

If hazmat

Dangerous Goods Declaration

IATA DG Declaration for classed cargo. Must show proper shipping name, UN number, class, and packing group. Provide the SDS and we prepare it.

If claiming FTA

Certificate of Origin

Claiming a free-trade-agreement or preferential duty rate? Upload the signed COO so you do not pay full most-favored-nation duty.

DG only

MSDS / SDS

Safety Data Sheet for hazardous or battery cargo. Confirms classification, handling, and emergency response for the airline and screeners.

Questions

Everything else about air freight.

The eight questions air shippers ask us most. Don't see yours? Email sales, response within 4 business hours.

Airlines bill the greater of two numbers: your shipment's actual gross weight, and its volumetric (dimensional) weight. Volumetric weight is calculated as length x width x height in centimeters, divided by 6,000, which gives a figure in kilograms. So a light but bulky pallet can have a chargeable weight far higher than what it weighs on a scale, because it takes up space the airline cannot sell to anyone else. We always quote on the chargeable weight and show you both numbers so there are no surprises.
