How Air Is Priced
Airlines sell space, not just mass. So they bill the greater of what your cargo weighs and how much room it occupies. Here is the math, up front, so your quote never surprises you.
Standard IATA air freight divisor
L (cm) Γ W (cm) Γ H (cm)divided by 6,000= volumetric weight (kg)
You are billed on whichever is larger: the actual gross weight on the scale, or the volumetric weight from the box dimensions. A light but bulky pallet is charged on its size, because it fills space the airline cannot resell.
One pallet, 120 Γ 100 Γ 110 cm, 180 kg actual
Tighter, denser packing lowers the volumetric figure and your rate. We show both numbers on every quote and flag where a re-pack would save you money.
Decision Guide
Air costs more per kilogram, but for the right cargo the faster cash cycle, lower inventory cost, and shorter exposure more than pay for it. Here is how to choose.
1 to 7 days, value density and urgency
20 to 40 days, dense and time-flexible
Specialized Handling
Dangerous goods, cold chain, and high-value freight each carry their own rules, equipment, and paperwork. We match all three to your shipment before it moves.
IATA-compliant handling for lithium batteries, aerosols, and classed chemicals. We prepare the DG Declaration and route to an aircraft that accepts the class.
Temperature-controlled handling and cool-dolly transfers for produce, seafood, and florals. Short air transit protects shelf life end to end.
Validated cold-chain lanes with active or passive packaging, temperature logging, and Good Distribution Practice documentation.
Secure tendering, screening, and Gateway Shield all-risk cover for electronics, semiconductors, and time-critical launches.
Pricing
One number on the quote, priced on chargeable weight. Everything below is rolled into the all-in rate unless it is called out as an add-on.
We quote everything up front. If a surcharge changes mid-transit (carrier fuel adjustment, peak-season rate, additional handling) we email you a pre-approval before billing it.
Paperwork
Upload these in the Gateway portal and we handle the filing. Missing a doc? We'll flag it before it causes a screening or customs hold.
Item-level breakdown: HTS codes, unit and total value, country of origin, incoterm. Used for customs valuation and duty.
Pieces, dimensions, gross and net weight per line. Drives the chargeable-weight calculation and matches the invoice line-for-line.
Gateway issues the House Air Waybill (HAWB) at booking; the airline issues the Master (MAWB). It is the contract of carriage and your tracking key.
IATA DG Declaration for classed cargo. Must show proper shipping name, UN number, class, and packing group. Provide the SDS and we prepare it.
Claiming a free-trade-agreement or preferential duty rate? Upload the signed COO so you do not pay full most-favored-nation duty.
Safety Data Sheet for hazardous or battery cargo. Confirms classification, handling, and emergency response for the airline and screeners.
Trade Lanes
A sample of the corridors we move every week. Rates are live and weight-specific, so we quote your lane on request.
Questions
The eight questions air shippers ask us most. Don't see yours? Email sales, response within 4 business hours.
Airlines bill the greater of two numbers: your shipment's actual gross weight, and its volumetric (dimensional) weight. Volumetric weight is calculated as length x width x height in centimeters, divided by 6,000, which gives a figure in kilograms. So a light but bulky pallet can have a chargeable weight far higher than what it weighs on a scale, because it takes up space the airline cannot sell to anyone else. We always quote on the chargeable weight and show you both numbers so there are no surprises.
